Accepted or Not

dave57pope

When Ahithophel realized that his advice had not been followed, he saddled his donkey and set out for his house in his hometown. He set his affairs in order and hanged himself. So he died and was buried in his father’s tomb. - 2 Samuel 17:23

Ahithophel, grandfather of Bathsheba and counselor to King David, was considered the greatest advisor in all the kingdom of Israel. However, when his advice was ignored by Absalom (David's son) and Abishai's was not, Ahithophel despaired to the point that he took his own life. Certainly there was more at work in this man's heart that would bring him to his decision, but for some reason Absalom's rejection was the instigating factor.

As a minister of the gospel, my counsel hasn't always been accepted by the members of the congregations or organizations I served. Perhaps, even your own advice has been rejected by a friend or family member. What should you do when such events occur? Well, certainly don't despair like Ahithophel!

First, be sure that your counsel or advice is from God. If it is (biblically wise), then rest in the assurance that God always accomplishes His goals in each of our lives and uses everything (even the rejection of wise counsel) to see that these goals are fulfilled.

Second, keep offering God's wisdom and counsel because accepted or not, it is still needed.

Give me a candle and a Bible, and shut me up in a dark dungeon, and I will tell you what the whole world is doing. - Unknown
