"Even if I have to die with You," Peter told Him, "I will never deny You!" And all the disciples said the same thing. - Matthew 26:35
Though the denial of Christ is magnified in the life and actions of Simon Peter, it is clear that all the disciples made a similar claim, even Judas. Similar failings may, of course, also be seen in the lives of Christ's disciples today.
For example, how often do we claim a consistent, steadfast faith, yet deny that claim by our actions? James is clear. Such claims of faith when they are unaccompanied by works are empty. On the other hand, how often do we give up without even trying. We may shun responsibility in Christ's kingdom, because (in our minds) failure is inevitable.
As wrong as it may be to boast about our faithfulness, is it any less a sin to act as if victory is never possible? Fact is, we will often fail and it is only by God's grace that we ever stand firm. Yet, we must still believe God for the victory, pray for the strength to stand firm, and thank Him for His grace when we do not.
Be not proud of race, face, place, or grace. - Samuel Rutherford
