Then He commanded them: "Watch out! Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod." - Mark 8:15
There are two apparent dangers that pose a threat to the abundant Christian life. One will lead you to legalism and the other to licentiousness.
There was the "yeast of the Pharisees" and "the yeast of Herod," and Jesus soberly warned His disciples about them both. Just a little influence from either is a danger to true faith and history has shown that each one can also lead to heresy and theological error. The only defense against such "yeast" is a thorough knowledge of God's Word, an indwelling Holy Spirit, and a solid hermeneutical principle. Hold firmly to His precepts and you will be safe. Abandon truth for prevailing cultural opinion and you will find yourself careening off His highway into an idolatrous ditch.
It is error alone which needs the support of government. Truth can stand by itself. - Thomas Jefferson
