Beware Presumption

David responded to Nathan, "I have sinned against YHWH." Then Nathan replied to David, "YHWH has taken away your sin; you will not die." - 2 Samuel 12:13

After David sinned with Bathsheba and had her husband killed, he was confronted by God's prophet, Nathan. David immediately acknowledged his fault and expressed heartfelt repentance before God (Psalm 32 and 51).

David must have thought he would die in his sin, but God forgave him and let him live. Of course, God's forgiveness did not alleviate all of the consequences. Certainly, the shame and regret of his error remained with him for the rest of his life. I imagine that the king also lost the respect of his friends, family, and subjects. We know that he and Bathsheba lost their son.

Sin always bears consequences, even when we repent and know God's forgiveness, yet we so easily forget this truth. May our security in Christ's purchased salvation not lead us to continuously presume upon His grace.
