Destroyed

David was angry because of Yahweh's outburst against Uzzah, so he named that place "Outburst Against Uzzah," as it is [still named] today. - 1 Chronicles 13:11

When God killed Uzzah (because he had touched the ark of the covenant), David called the place where it happened, Perez-Uzzah, which means "Outburst Against Uzzah." The text even reveals that David was angry because of God's action, but was the anger directed at Yahweh or was David angry with himself over his own carelessness? We cannot know for certain, but one thing is clear. God is serious about His holiness and when a person encounters it, they are "destroyed."

Do you have such a place in your life? A place where you were utterly "destroyed" by the holiness of God? A moment in time when you realized His transcendent worth and your own humbling need?

God is holy, but it seems that much of the time we act as if He isn't. We forget that the Creator God of the universe should be treated with awe, respect, and reverence. The writer of Hebrews said, "... let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need (Heb. 4:16)." Yes, let us draw near to God's throne, but never cease to do so in reverence, for if Jesus had not died in our place, we all would have ended up like Uzzah.

I am ready to meet God face to face tonight and look into those eyes of infinite holiness, for all my sins are covered by the atoning blood. - R. A. Torrey
