After seeing them, they reported the message they were told about this Child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. But Mary was treasuring up all these things in her heart and meditating on them. - Luke 2:17-19
In these two sentences, we see two responses to the miraculous birth of Jesus.
When the shepherds learned of Christ's birth, they freely proclaimed all that they had seen and heard. Mary, on the other hand, told no one. Of course, while the shepherds were objective observers of the angelic host and Messianic predictions, Mary was an involved mother and took some time to absorb the grandeur of her personal experience. What could she possibly say? Who would even begin to believe her experience?
It is often more difficult to remain objective when God's work is intimately personal, because frankly, reporting an event is always easier than living it. Even so, in light of the risen Christ, may we do both.
Do good by stealth and blush to find it fame. - Alexander Pope
