Now the sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel (for he was the firstborn, but because he defiled his father’s bed, his birthright was given to the sons of Joseph the son of Israel; so that he is not enrolled in the genealogy according to the birthright). - 1 Chronicles 5:1
The story of Reuben is the tale of someone who loved his father, devalued his birthright, and revealed a lack of discretion and wisdom through his actions. The kingdom of Israel was Reuben's by right, but it was lost by lust. It wasn't that Reuben was wantonly disobedient. Rather, he just lacked passionate obedience. Exemplified by his part in Joseph's captivity, Reuben always seemed to be on the inside of some bad decisions (yet always wondering how he got there).
If it is indeed our desire to live God-honoring lives, then it is best to draw "fixed" boundaries, hard lines (not dotted) in the sand that we determine to never cross. For if such boundaries are not pre-established, we might wake up one day with a soiled reputation, a ruined witness, and abundant regret.
Young men, be not deceived. Think not you can, at will, serve lusts and pleasures in your beginning, and then go and serve God with ease at your latter end. Think not you can live with Esau, and then die with Jacob.... It is an awful mockery to suppose you can give the flower of your strength to the world and the devil, and then put off the King of Kings with the scraps and leavings of your hearts. - J. C. Ryle
