Go Near, Hear All, and Do It

Go near and hear all that the Lord our God says; then speak to us all that the Lord our God speaks to you, and we will hear and do it. - Deuteronomy 5:27

Having witnessed God's unlimited power and having also seen His wrath fall on the disobedient and ungodly, the Israelites chose to have Moses act as their intermediary with God. They seemed to fear what might happen if they approached Him themselves.

As Christ-followers, Jesus has already endured God's wrath (in our place), yet many still seek another to "go near and hear all that God says." Spiritual anemia is a common mark of many today, simply because they seek someone else to do what they have been allowed, no invited to do for themselves. We must understand that while God has given pastor-teachers to His churches to equip the saints, they are not intermediaries. Every Christ-follower must personally "go near" and take the necessary time to hear all that God has to say, and then do what He commands!

Let us stop looking for others to do for us that which we should be doing for ourselves. Go near, hear all, and do it.

The study of God's Word, for the purpose of discovering God's will, is the secret discipline which has formed the greatest characters. - James Waddel Alexander
