He inquired of the LORD, but the LORD did not answer him in dreams or by the Urim or by the prophets. Saul then said to his servants, "Find me a woman who is a medium, so I can go and consult her. His servants replied, "There is a woman at En-dor who is a medium." - 1 Samuel 28:6-7
Have you ever felt as if God put you on "hold?" You know, you keep "making calls," but all you seem to be hearing is, "All circuits are busy."
There were some good reasons why God did not answer King Saul's inquiries (then again, aren't God's reasons always good), but when:
the dreams were absent,
the Urim were confusing, and
the prophets remained silent,
Saul adopted plan "D" and consulted a source that God had expressly forbidden.
Sometimes, when we are on "hold," our answers do not come as clearly or as quickly as we would like.
Prayer does not produce,
Counsel (from the Word and from the saints) seems to conflict, and
Circumstances are confusing.
At times like these, we must resist the temptation to work outside God's proscribed methods just to obtain simple answers (i.e., using man-centered reasoning or means). For if we persist in doing things our own way, God may just give us an answer, but it might be the consequences of our foolish aims.
Wait on the Lord, but while you are waiting, examine yourself to see what the hindrance might be.
Good prayers never come creeping home. I am sure I shall receive either what I ask or what I should ask. - Joseph Hall
