Growing Up or Just Old

Older men are to be self-controlled, worthy of respect, sensible, and sound in faith, love, and endurance. - Titus 2:2

I am gradually becoming an old man. My hair is getting whiter. My eyesight and hearing are failing. Other "stuff" just doesn't work like it once did. You get the picture.

Yet, in spite of all these "changes," I am blessed because it seems that some things (that were not as strong as I would have once liked), are now growing. For example, I am more self-controlled, more worthy of respect, more sensible, and more sound in faith, love, and endurance, than I used to be. You do not hear me saying I have "arrived" in any of these attributes, only that I am growing in them. In other words, God is working on me and in me and, hopefully, I look a little more like Jesus now than I used to.

Aging might not be fun, but it is necessary and inevitable. There is no question that it comes for us all. The important question is this, "As you grow old, are you also growing up?" To experience the former without the latter would just be sad.

The aging process has you firmly in its grasp if you never get the urge to throw a snowball. - Don Larson
