Have You Not Heard?

Have you not heard? Long ago I did it; from ancient times I planned it. Now I have brought it to pass, that you should turn fortified cities into ruinous heaps. - 2 Kings 19:25

Sennacherib was the king of Assyria during the reign of Hezekiah, king of Judah. Mistakenly, the Assyrian king thought that his own power had brought him victory over his enemies and he boasted of his ability to sack Jerusalem as well. In his hubris, Sennacherib either forgot or perhaps never realized the involvement of a sovereign, almighty God.

It was through Isaiah that God eventually asked the pagan king a simple question, "Have you not heard?" In other words, Isaiah asked, "Who do you think made all this happen?"

Too often we act like Sennacherib. We begin to think that we are the masters of our own destiny and easily forget that a sovereign God "designed it long ago." We forget the "Creator and Sustainer" and begin to walk the widest path to personal destruction, forgetting or ignoring the oversight of an omniscient, omnipotent, omnipresent of God.

The things is, we have heard. So, why behave as if we have not.

Satan cannot win. Why not? Because he has denied God's sovereignty and disobeyed God's law. - Gary North
