I will place My residence among you, and I will not reject you. I will walk among you and be your God, and you will be My people. - Leviticus 26:11-12

As we read through the Scriptures, we find many occasions where physical (as well as emotional and spiritual) rest is recommended. It is vital that we take the time to stop and reflect on all that God has done (and is doing) for us and through us for His glory. In addition to the obvious beneficial aspects that rest produces, I would like to add another. It is the acknowledged presence of God.

If the Israelites left their fields alone in the seventh year, God would physically bless them in the sixth, eighth, and ninth. The verses above also indicate that He would guarantee His presence in response to their obedience. In the same way, God's presence in the heart of a Christ-follower is guaranteed and it means peace, power, and assurance forever. His presence means that He absolutely knows all your difficulties and even if they should endure for an extended period, you may be confident that He has not forgotten you. Rest allows you to pause and reflect on the fact that He is indeed there.

So remain and rest in Him. If you do, He will make known His residence in your heart and you will never know His rejection. You will know with certainty that He is yours and you are His.

Heathenism is a state of mind. You can take it that I'm referring to one who does not see his world. He has no mental light. He destroys almost unwittingly. He cannot feel God's presence in his life. He is the 21st century man. - David Bowie
