And when many troubles and afflictions come to them, this song will testify against them, because their descendants will not have forgotten it. For I know what they are prone to do, even before I bring them into the land I swore to give them. - Deuteronomy 31:21
There are many words for love in the Bible, but the one that fascinates me the most is often translated as "lovingkindness" in our English versions. In fact, this Hebrew word is better understood to bear an emphasis upon God's love as seen in His covenant. In other words, the essence of God's love (His "CHESED") is that it is not dependent upon our response, but rather upon His decision.
Before Israel was a people. Before Egypt. Before the exodus. Before the wilderness. Before entering the Promised Land. God knew. He knew Israel's failure, disobedience, and bent towards sin. Yet, He chose to love them.
And, before you were a person. Before your slavery (to sin). Before your freedom (by Christ). Before your wanderings (from Him). God knew you, too. He knew your failure, disobedience, and weakness of flesh. Yet, He still loves you.
Wherever you are, He may be found, just come back. He knows and He loves.
What comes to our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us. - A. W. Tozer
