But let him ask in faith without doubting. For the doubter is like the surging sea, driven and tossed by the wind. - James 1:6
In my early study of this simple verse my focus was always on the "asking." It is clear from the text that we must first trust God to grant His wisdom before we begin to ask for it in faith. Got it.
On the other hand, isn't it just as important that we also trust the wisdom God provides when we receive it? Too often we bring our needs before the Lord, see Him respond with the wisdom to meet or resolve them, but then hesitate to act according to the wise counsel that He gives (through His Word, godly counsel, prayer). We waver because we lack the faith necessary to act upon what He has shown us to be true.
To "ask in faith without doubting" means that we do not doubt God's ability to fulfill our request, but it also means that we do not doubt His answer. First, we must believe that He knows best, but then we must also act like it.
The Shepherd knows what pastures are best for His sheep, and they must not question or doubt, but trustingly follow Him. - H. W. Smith
