Hey, Listen!

For we also have received the good news just as they did; but the message they heard did not benefit them, since they were not united with those who heard it in faith.... - Hebrews 4:2

As a pastor, I have sometimes wondered if anyone was truly "hearing" my sermons. A few folks were verbal in their response, but most were not and it was often difficult to know if any connection was being made, if the message was getting through. Sometimes, usually much later, someone might offer a comment, but I just learned not to put too much weight on my initial perceptions.

I also learned another important lesson. The work of the Holy Spirit can sometimes take days or weeks to manifest in a person's life and not all "visible" responses are genuine. People may need an emotional release, but lacking accompanying faith in Christ they receive no long-term benefit.

In the end, this was my conclusion. As messengers, those who deliver God's Word must do all they can to ensure God's message is proclaimed accurately and clearly, but actual receipt of that message remains with those who must listen.

To one who has faith, no explanation is necessary. To one without faith, no explanation is possible. - Thomas Aquinas
