His Retirement Plan

In regard to the Levites: From 25 years old or more, a man enters the service in the work at the tent of meeting. But at 50 years old he is to retire from his service in the work and no longer serve. - Numbers 8:23-24

I have led and taught financial seminars many times in my 35 years of vocational ministry. One topic that always arises (and I have purposely included) concerns retirement. Obviously our government in the U.S. has set ages at which varying levels of retirement benefits may be received in the form of Social Security. Many employers offer their employees retirement "packages" and even early retirement to make the way for a younger (lower cost) work force.

What does the Bible say about the topic?

The only reference to the subject is the one I have included above and it concerns the age of those who would be handling God's most sacred objects. Even then, a 50-year-old Levite was expected to remain an assistant in the task of temple service. Ceasing all work was never an option.

To "produce" by one's personal efforts is a blessing from God. Whatever a person's retirement plans might be, they should not exclude His service. As long as we have a body in which to carry out God's will, then we must, and that my friends is His retirement plan.
