All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work." - 2 Timothy 3:16-17
A wise mentor once told me (before my formal ministry training even began), "Any ax can cut wood, but it is much easier if it is sharpened." Of course, this proverb wasn't original, but I got the point. I would need to devote my life to the study of God's Word, if I expected to serve Him effectively.
Paul made this same point to Timothy. If I might paraphrase, he said, "In whatever you are doing with your life to bring glory to the Savior (the very definition of a "good work"), the equipment/knowledge you require to do it well can only come from the Scriptures."
Today we might tell a "budding" minister to "hit the books," but frankly most of what I have learned came from hitting God's.
The Holy Bible is an abyss. It is impossible to explain how profound it is, impossible to explain how simple it is. - Ernest Hello
