John the Whatever

All who heard about him took it to heart saying, "What will this child become?" For, indeed, the Lord's hand was with him. - Luke 1:66

John, son of Zechariah, who became "The Baptist" had an auspicious beginning to his life. His prenatal years and even his birth were both surrounded by an air of expectancy and the palpable presence of God. Considering all of this, it was natural for his parents and the surrounding community to wonder at all God had in store.

Even though our own children lack such miraculous beginnings, do we not wonder as well? What will our children become? Will they change the world?

Having reared two of our own I can tell you from experience that some of your hopes will be realized, but that others will not. The most amazing revelation is that the Lord's hand is with them no matter what. So whether you're parenting "John the Baptist" or "John the Whatever," God can and will do great and marvelous things through your kid.

The best way to keep children home is to make the home atmosphere pleasant, and let the air out of the tires. - Dorothy Parker
