Brothers, I do not consider myself to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: forgetting what is behind and reaching forward to what is ahead, I pursue as my goal the prize promised by God's heavenly call in Christ Jesus. - Philippians 3:13-14
When I look back on my ministry life, with all of its twists and turns, I sometimes wonder if I led my family as I should have. While not all changes seemed planned, it certainly seemed to be the plan of God at the time and as I seek to remain obedient to God today and all the days to follow, one question (to borrow a phrase form Francis Schaeffer) dominates my thoughts.
"How should we then live?"
Perhaps, the best answer is found in the attitude of the Apostle Paul who just kept reaching.
At the end of this earthly life, there is a prize. Like Paul, we must all run to win it. Sometimes the path or course will resemble a steeple-chase (full of obstacles), but the only answer is to keep moving forward, to press on. We must simply forget what is behind (without neglecting the lessons learned) and focus on what is ahead.
What new "paths" lie ahead of ? Are there any challenges or changes to be confronted? Of course, there are, but the only choice we have is to keep on reaching.
By perseverance the snail reached the ark. - Charles Spurgeon
