Keep On Reading

Therefore, brothers, since we have boldness to enter the sanctuary through the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that He has inaugurated for us, through the curtain (that is, His flesh; and since we have a great high priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, our hearts sprinkled [clean] from an evil conscience and our bodies washed in pure water. - Hebrews 10:19-22

In spite of all the formal education I have received, one personal practice has been more beneficial to my growth as a Christ-follower than almost all the seminary classes combined. It is the discipline of daily time in God's Word. At times, it seems like a chore, but it is vital and I never stop learning! If all goes as planned, this year I will complete it for the 36th time.

The Scriptures are a bottomless well of the knowledge and wisdom of God. For example, as I was reading through the letter to the Hebrews a few years ago, I realized from the passage above that the temple veil was a "type" of Christ. How did I ever miss that?! I always knew that at the moment of His death the veil was torn from the top to the bottom (signifying God's provision of access to the holy of holies and intimate fellowship with Himself), but for some reason it never struck me that this was an image of Christ's body, His flesh, His sacrifice, a new and living Way inaugurated for us.

I am overwhelmed with thankfulness for the sacrifice Christ made for me, but also for the limitless riches of God's Word; therefore, I will keep on reading.

A thorough knowledge of the Bible is worth more than a college education. - Theodore Roosevelt
