But he hesitated, so because of the LORD’s compassion for him, the men grabbed his hand, his wife's hand, and the hands of his two daughters. And they brought him out and left him outside the city. – Genesis 19:16
Lot (the nephew of Abraham), after learning that God was going to destroy his hometown (Sodom), had a difficult time leaving. I am sure that he had seen the wickedness that permeated the place, but apparently, he also saw the loss of all his possessions and livelihood. It seems that Lot was torn between present security and future uncertainty, so God got physical.
This is a common struggle, I think. People know that their present lives are not the best (ungodly, perhaps even utterly wicked), but the uncertainty of a future life apart from the "known" is too great to entertain change and they freeze up. What can be done to break free?
The only answer is to "see" the future through eyes of "faith" as God's grace drags us "kicking" and "screaming" from this present darkness into His marvelous light.
We are what we do, not what we did. Now if we continue doing what we used to do, we can't be upset that we are still what we were, simply because we're still doing what we did! – Damon Lofton
