Solomon brought the daughter of Pharaoh from the city of David to the house he had built for her, for he said, "My wife must not live in the house of David king of Israel because the places to which the ark of Yahweh has come are holy." - 2 Chronicles 8:11
At some point, Solomon realized that his pagan wife couldn't live in Jerusalem where the ark of Yahweh had also been housed. So he moved her to a private residence, out of town. Of course, this understanding concerning her pagan nature didn't keep Solomon from marrying her in the first place! Like many, Solomon seemed to struggle to reconcile spiritual truth with his daily life. While he was able to see the error of his wife's presence in the city of David, he never saw the mistake of her presence in the life of the son of David.
Could it be that one of the greatest problems with the effectiveness of the western church today is similar to the one that plagued Solomon? We often compartmentalize our lives into the "sacred" and the "secular," blissfully unaware that God considers them one. The truth is that all of life is to be consecrated unto God and the obedience of the saints to a weekly event (like a Sunday service) can never negate lives of disobedience throughout the week.
It's all sacred. We live one life, not two.
