Our Beer-sheba

He called it Oath. Therefore, the name of the city is Beer-sheba to this day. – Genesis 26:33

Isaac made an oath (covenant) with King Abimelek (of the Philistines) and, to memorialize the place where this contract was made, he called it the "Well of the Oath" or "Beer (well) -sheba (oath)."

Where is your "Beer-sheba?" Where is that place where you entered a covenant of peace with your enemy, who was God Himself? I imagine you remember the moment, if not the place. Perhaps it was a church camp, church building, friend's home, or even your own "Damascus Road." Most people can remember the day, the moment, the location, and even the sounds and feel of the place where they received Christ.

Yet, upon deep theological reflection, every Christ-follower would have to agree that it was actually none of the "places" indicated above. For we understand that the place of peace with God, the place where the covenant was made, is the same for us all.

It can only be the Cross of Christ. This is where our "well of forgiveness" is found. Our "Beer-sheba" is Calvary.

How small regard is had to the oath of God by men professing the name of God. – George Gillespie
