"Cursed is anyone who does not put the words of this law into practice." And all the people will say, "Amen!" - Deuteronomy 27:26
Before the Israelites entered the promised land, Moses gave them the challenge to obey all of God's commandments. If a person failed to obey every single one of them, then he (or she) would be cursed, and with each challenge that Moses issued, the people of Israel responded, "Amen!" meaning, "We agree!" Biblical history records that Israel (as a people) did not obey God, they were condemned by their own words, and suffered greatly for their disobedience.
So what does this have to do with those who claim to follow Jesus Christ?
How often have we, as Christ-followers, "amen-ed" God (in the assembly), but gone on to live lives (when apart from that assembly) that tell a different story? Haven't we also been guilty of proclaiming faithfulness and obedience when the facts would prove otherwise? Should not our lives, under grace, reflect a different reality?
Actions are our true "amen" with God. We must be thankful for grace, but also seek lives that would make it less necessary.
