Schooled By God

He humbled you by letting you go hungry; then He gave you manna to eat, which you and your fathers had not known, so that you might learn that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD. - Deuteronomy 8:3

Have you ever been "schooled" by God?

If not, then you may not be truly His, for God "schools" His children, at home and everywhere else, and His "schooling" begins with the "humbling."

God's humbling occurs when He deprives you of something you have deemed necessary for life (for example: bread for Israel, a career or job for us, perhaps even a relationship). His goal is to make the truth absolutely clear that you cannot (by your own power) meet your own vital need. Once you arrive at this humble estate, God then provides His substitute, something so unidentifiable that you may only later recognize it as God's answer (The Israelites saw the bread from heaven and called it "manna," which means, "What is it?"). He does this in order to teach us utter dependence upon His provision.

Therefore, if you feel a little "stuck," just know that God will probably keep on "schooling" until you humbly start learning.

Life is a long lesson in humility. - James M. Barrie
