Simple Orders

In the presence of God, who gives life to all, and before Christ Jesus, who gave a good confession before Pontius Pilate, I charge you to keep the commandment without spot or blame until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, which God will bring about in His own time. - 1 Timothy 6:13-15

Henry Blackaby, in his popular study entitled "Experiencing God," taught that in the absence of a new commandment from the Lord, a Christ-follower should just remain obedient to the last command they received. To put it simply, we, like soldiers, have received our marching orders and should just follow them until they are replaced.

Good word. So, what are our marching orders?

Here we see Paul's marching orders to his protégé Timothy, but maybe they would work for us, too. The questions of what to do, how to do it, and how long to do it are all answered.

What should we do? "Keep the commandment....", which in this case seems to refer to fighting the good fight of faith. How should we do it? "... without spot or blame...." How long should we do it? "... until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ...."

Our orders are simple. Now, we just need to get to it.

Every soldier must know, before he goes into battle, how the little battle he is to fight fits into the larger picture, and how the success of his fighting will influence the battle as a whole. - Bernard Law Montgomery
