Suffering's Temptation

For since He Himself was tempted in that which He suffered, He is able to come to the aid of those who are tempted. - Hebrews 2:18

Temptation is  a common malady experienced by all of God's created humanity. The fact that the Son of God (Jesus Christ) was tempted as we are, yet without sinning, speaks to both the holiness and the humanity of the Savior.

Of course, there is another human experience that Jesus shared and that was suffering. We all suffer in some way but in this context, the author of Hebrews writes of the unique challenge that temptation in suffering offers. When we suffer, there is an opportunity for disobedience that is not experienced elsewhere.

As Christ Jesus suffered humiliation, pain, and rejection in His crucifixion, He was also tempted. He was tempted to turn back, to doubt, to fear, and to revile. Yet, in all that Jesus endured, He did not sin. He overcame doubt. He was courageous. He finished His task.

Here, in Christ, we find more grace. The Lord is with us in whatever we face, whenever we face it.

A Christian is someone who shares the sufferings of God in the world. - Dietrich Bonhoeffer
