The Chickens Always Come Home

Judah recognized [them] and said, "She is more in the right than I, since I did not give her to my son Shelah." And he did not know her intimately again. - Genesis 38:26

Have you ever heard the proverb, "The chickens have come home to roost"? It means that our wrongful actions have consequences and usually, in the end, we ourselves are the ones who experience them.

Judah did not keep his promise to his daughter-in-law (Tamar) that required him to provide her with a husband. As a result, Tamar deceived Judah and he (himself) became the father of her twin boys. When Judah realized his mistake, he was forced to take responsibility and acknowledge his unjust actions.

In this life, we often make mistakes. Sometimes these "mistakes" are actually unjust actions and they are intentional. Sometimes these actions go undetected and we might begin to think that we have escaped the consequences, yet this is, in fact, impossible. Do not be deceived. In this life, or at the judgment, "the chickens will always come home to roost."

All human sin seems so much worse in its consequences than in its intentions. - Reinhold Niebuhr
