The Death of Idolatry

For the idolaters eagerly seek all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. - Matthew 6:32

Those of us with distinctly "civilized" sensibilities usually consider idolaters to be utterly pagan, uncivilized barbarians who chant, sacrifice animals, and dance around huge fires in the middle of the night. Yet, are we not as idolatrous as they when we make the "things of this world" the focus of our life's existence?

Anything a person actively pursues apart from God Himself is considered an idol by the Creator and, therefore, any person who actively pursues something other than the God of heaven and earth is an "idolater" --- one who practices idolatry.

This should not be the practice of those who claim to follow Christ Jesus. We should find complete fulfillment in Him. For satisfaction in the Savior is the certain death of idolatry in us.

Love is not merely a gentle touch or a pat on the head. It is a refiner's fire. It burns to purify. - Elisabeth Elliott
