The Goal is Love

Now the goal of our instruction is love that comes from a pure heart, a good conscience, and a sincere faith. - 1 Timothy 1:5

I was once engaged in a discussion with a faithful few at my local church, where we bantered over what values we considered "core" to our fellowship. Many had already been presented, but a dear sister in Christ brought forth another that we had previously missed.

What was the core value we were missing?

We believe in the love of Christ. Paul, instructing his protégé in the faith (Timothy), crystalized the aim of a pastor's teaching ministry and I would like to add, the teaching ministry of a local church, into one little word, love.

Yes, our faith must be sincere. We absolutely must maintain a good conscience. Our hearts must remain pure as well, but only because they all serve as a source from which springs the love of God that is in Christ Jesus. Ultimately, the only answer (and therefore our primary aim) for this sin-sick world is greater love from Christ through us.

Love your neighbor for God's sake, and God for your own sake. - Leaves of Gold
