The Missionary's Strength

I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has strengthened me, because He considered me faithful, putting me into service, even though I was formerly a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent aggressor. Yet I was shown mercy because I acted ignorantly in unbelief; and the grace of our Lord was more than abundant, with the faith and love which are found in Christ Jesus. - 1 Timothy 1:12–14

Why me?

It is a question that many with a "missionary" calling probably ask themselves and I am fairly certain that each one who is so-called feels inadequate for the task before him or her, and still extremely thankful that God has granted them the opportunity.

Paul once wrote that God's strength was perfected in his own weakness. Can the Sovereign's strength abound if I have confidence in my own power apart from His presence? Probably not. While God is strengthening me He is a also teaching me to get into the yoke with Him, to depend on Him, to walk with Him each and every day or falter.

Recently someone said that a missionary is a person who never gets used to the sound of a million pagan footsteps shuffling into a Christless eternity. True, but a missionary is also one who never walks in his or her own strength alone.

Every friend of Jesus is a friend of missions. Where there is a healthy spiritual life, there is a love for the missionary cause. - Andrew Murray
