The Obedient Pastor's Path

When the people saw that Moses delayed in coming down from the mountain, they gathered around Aaron and said to him, “Come, make gods for us who will go before us because this Moses, the man who brought us up from the land of Egypt—we don’t know what has happened to him!” - Exodus 32:1.

When Moses didn't come down from the mountain (on the Israelite's timetable), they demanded that Aaron make them new gods to meet their felt needs. In response, Aaron gave them exactly what they wanted, a manmade god in the form of a golden calf.

It seems to me that there are a lot of people in our churches today who want the same thing; however, the work of a pastor-teacher is not to give people what they want, but what they need. What they need, what we all need is the God of Scripture. While it may not be the popular path to take these days, it will be the obedient one.

Aaron forgot his responsibility before God and followed the sheep instead of shepherding them. Be thankful for pastors who know the difference.

Don't necessarily avoid sharp edges. Occasionally they are necessary to leadership. - Donald Rumsfeld
