Time to Grow Up

dave57pope

For by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of God's revelation. You need milk, not solid food. - Hebrews 5:12

I can remember as a boy wanting to learn how to ride a bicycle without training wheels. I also remember when I first drove a car, by myself. I can even recall the first time I voted in a presidential election. All of us experience "rites of passage" like these that mark our physical maturation, but what about our spiritual growth as Christ-followers?

While all of us were once ignorant "babes," we should have entered the "learner" phase once we believed. The sad truth is that many never move beyond these "spiritual life stages" to become laborers and leaders (obviously while always continuing to learn). While we would all think it silly and a sign of serious mental deficiency for an adult to drink from a baby's bottle, we seem to tolerate similar spiritual immaturity among ourselves.

If you cannot identify one other person in your life who might be called your "student," then you are most likely not a "teacher," it is probably time to grow up.

Complacency is a deadly foe of all spiritual growth. Acute desire must be present or there will be no manifestation of Christ to His people. He waits to be wanted. Too bad that with many of us He waits too long, so very long in vain. - A. W. Tozer
