Honor your father and mother —which is the first commandment with a promise - that it may go well with you and that you may have a long life in the land. - Ephesians 6:2-3
Do you remember the old country song/duet performed by Willie Nelson and Julio Iglesias? It was called, "To All the Girls I've Loved Before," and spoke of their various lady-friends from their past. This morning, I would like to dedicate this blog (hey, I'm not a songwriter) to Cindy Pope, Joy Mabry, Adena Lawson, and Hulette Pope, "To All the Mom's I've Loved Before."
"Mama Pope," also known as Hulette, was a woman of faith who is most often remembered for her sweet voice that often rang out during unexpected moments and movements of the Holy Spirit at Riverdale Baptist Church. I remember her sweet disposition and loving hugs.
"Nonnie," also known as "Deen," was a hoot. She was the best cook on earth, taught my mama how it was done, and my mom passed it on to my wife (still reaping those benefits). She was also full of hugs and love and some of my most vivid memories of her are sitting in a cane-back chair to the right front at Mt. Zion Baptist Church.
"JoJo," is my mama. I keep reminding everyone that long before she was "JoJo" (who apparently belongs to the world) she was just mine! Now, I happily share her, but sometimes begrudgingly. We have been through some tough times. We have lost much. We have gained a lot in each other. She is quite possibly the most amazing woman I have ever met (except for one), I love her, and it is a joy to still have her in our lives.
"Nonnie II," also known as Cindy, is my help-meet. By God's grace we found each other when we were young and stupid (I was stupid, she was just young). By God's grace, we will celebrate 46 years together this month. She is the most amazing woman I have ever known. She has stood by me in MS, TX, GA, NY, IN, PA, VA, CIV, BFA, CA, and NJ. She is a beautiful person and lady. God blesses me by her presence and through her counsel, and she gave us Christopher and Joy Lynn (an amazing mom herself!). We are one and I love her so much.
To all the mom's I've loved before, and those I keep on loving and thanking God for every day. May every day be Mother's Day!
My mother had a great deal of trouble with me, but I think she enjoyed it. - Mark Twain
