For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life, a ransom for many. - Mark 10:44
As Jesus neared the end of His time on earth, the disciples began to bicker over who among them would hold the best positions in His new kingdom. It seems that they had no idea what Jesus truly meant by "kingdom," but they certainly thought they did.
When Jesus spoke of kings, leaders, and rank He made it clear that the power of spiritual leadership came from beneath, from a position of service. He also taught (and lived) that this position of leadership could not be obtained by personal power, but rather by subjection of personal power to the almighty power of God.
If we have been "appointed" to anything in this life, it is (like Jesus) to be the bond-servant of all.
People are illogical, unreasonable and self-centered. Love them anyway. - John R. W. Stott
