And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience. - Ephesians 2:1–2
Why are we surprised by evil? Why should we ever be amazed at the behavior of those who claim no allegiance to God? Could it be that it is because we have bought into a heretical modern-day theology that proclaims the inherent "goodness" of mankind and rejected or remained ignorant of biblical truth?
Paul refers to our enemy, Satan, as "the prince of the power of the air." He also wrote that this "prince" is a "spirit now working in the sons of disobedience." While a person might sincerely desire to believe in the basic goodness of humanity, the Bible clearly teaches that it does not exist, and no matter how often we hear from those in political office that mankind "can" do anything, we "cannot" apart from the indwelling presence of a holy God.
The goal of those who claim to follow Jesus Christ must always be the conversion of souls, not just mere rehabilitation. True change requires complete spiritual transformation. May it likewise be true and complete in us!
Every story of conversion is the story of a blessed defeat. - C.S. Lewis
