What a King

So Mephibosheth ate at David’s table just like one of the king’s sons. - 2 Samuel 9:11

After King David had defeated all of Israel's enemies and established his throne in Jerusalem, he began to wonder if any of Saul's descendants remained. He had no desire to annihilate them, but instead he wanted to bless them, and when the king discovered the existence of the son of his dear friend Jonathan that is exactly what he did. Mephibosheth, son of Jonathan (son of Saul) became a member of David's own family (like his own child) and regularly dined at the king's table for the remainder of his life.

Like Mephibosheth, our ancestor (Adam) became the enemy of the King, forfeited our right to an inheritance, resulting in an irreparable handicap (sin). Yet the King, by grace, showed mercy and offered to restore our inheritance inviting us to sit (though unworthy) at His table for all eternity.

"Bless the YHWH, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless His holy name. Bless YHWH, O my soul, and forget none of His benefits; who pardons all your iniquities, who heals all your diseases; who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with lovingkindness and compassion; who satisfies your years with good things, so that your youth is renewed like the eagle." - Psalm 103:1-5

What a kingdom! What a King! What a promise!

Is it not wonderful news to believe that salvation lies outside ourselves? - Martin Luther
