Worship's Greatest Enemy

Then it shall come about when the LORD your God brings you into the land that He swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give you, great and splendid cities which you did not build, and houses full of all good things which you did not fill, and carved cisterns which you did not carve out, vineyards and olive trees which you did not plant, and you eat and are satisfied, be careful that you do not forget the LORD who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. - Deuteronomy 6:10–12

Do you know what might be the greatest enemy of our worship of God? Well, it isn't Satan or an idol.

The greatest enemy of our worship of God might just be our success. God warned the Israelites that they should be careful not to forget Him when they began to enjoy the fruits of victory in the promised land. He said this because they had a tendency to ignore Him when everything was going well.

Ever done that? Like Israel, we must not forget the Lord who has brought us out of the "land" of sin and the place of slavery. Our spiritual success is no accident. If we succeed in His service, it is always His plan and blessing at work.

When we fail in His service it is likely because we have simply forgotten the One we serve.

They that know God will be humble, and they that know themselves, cannot be proud. - John Flavel
