You Ain't All That

Now God has revealed these things to us by the Spirit, for the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. - 1 Corinthians 2:10

I don't know if it hits others like it does me, but sometimes I see what others are doing and think, "Really? How could you be so careless or ignorant?" Then, after a few moments (usually nanoseconds) reveling in my utter superiority, I am reminded by the indwelling Holy Spirit of all the stupid things I have done and how God's presence in my life was the only guard against me repeating them.

How often do we angrily rail at those who pursue destructive ends (leaders, politicians, friends, fellow believers) as if we came to a proper, righteous conclusion on such matters by our own means? I am not saying that we should avoid confronting dangerous ignorance when we observe it, but I am saying that we should confront it with an understandable humility rooted in a biblical anthropology.

Listen, this world is fallen. Without Christ, we are truly a bunch of knuckleheads. Though God's grace may enlighten even the unwilling, His wisdom does not exist outside of His presence in our lives. If you truly do understand, be "light," but remember to also be humble.

You ain't all that.

Humility is the foundation of all the other virtues hence, in the soul in which this virtue does not exist there cannot be any other virtue except in mere appearance. - Augustine
